If you didn't know, the Gregorian calendar is the modern calendar that we use today and the Julian calendar is the older calendar with an error that we used a couple of hundred years ago. In the modern Gregorian calendar, a year lasts 365.2425 days. This means that a common year consists of 365 days, and every 4 years there's a leap year consisting of 366 days (with an exception of the years that are divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400 years). The Julian calendar is less precise, and according to it, the year consists of 365.25 days, which means that every 4th year is a leap year. As a result, every 400 years the Gregorian and Julian calendars shift by 3 days. Our calculator allows you to convert any date from the Gregorian calendar to the Julian calendar. For example, if you enter the current calendar date as the input, such as 2022-05-06, you'll get 2022-04-23 as the Julian calendar date as the output. By activating the checkbox in the options, you can also display the Julian day. The Julian day is a continuous count of the days that have passed since the noon of January 1, -4712 (in Julian calendar), which is the same as November 24, -4713 (in Gregorian calendar). In this example, we load January 15th, 2010 as the input, which is the day of the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century. We convert this Gregorian date to the Julian calendar and get the date 2010-01-02 in the output. As we can see, the difference between the Gregorian and Julian calendars in 2010 is 13 days.
In this example, we convert multiple dates from each century of the Gregorian calendar to the Julian calendar. We start with the date 2000-06-30 and decrease each date by 100 years. The first year 2000 is divisible by 100 and 400, so it is a leap year in both calendars. The following 3 years (1900, 1800, 1700) are common years in the Gregorian calendar but they are leap years in the Julian calendar, so they shift by one calendar day. If you look closely, then every 4 input dates (which span over 400 years) are shifted by 3 days in the output dates. We also display the Julian day for each output date and use a custom output date format.
In this example, we find the beginning of the Julian Period, when the Julian day (JD) is equal to 0. According to the Gregorian calendar, this date falls on the noon of Nov 24, 4714 BC (which is the same date as Nov 24, -4713 – notice how a "BC" date is offset by one compared to a negative date). We paste this date into the input field as the first date and then increment the following dates by various amounts to show you various interesting JD numbers ranging from 0 to 10,000,000. To put these numbers in perspective, we add a recent 21st-century date at the end of the list, which has the Julian day count of 2451673.3014 (the precision is 4). We don't use padding in the example, but we do show the time part of the date, which, by the way, is the same in both the Gregorian and Julian calendars.
