list item grouper

world's simplest list tool

This is a super simple browser-based application that groups items in any list. You can specify the number of items per group, customize the separating symbol between groups and group items, wrap groups in custom quotes (or brackets), and fill incomplete groups with custom padding items. Created by list geeks from team Browserling.

What is a list item grouper?

This online tool creates groups from items in a list. In the options, you can enter how many items should go in a single group and in the output you'll get custom-formatted groups. In the options, you can specify the symbol to put between groups and the symbol to put between items within each group. You can enclose each group in parentheses, quotes, brackets, or other characters using the left and right group-wrap options. If the list has empty items, you can get rid of them via the "Delete Empty Items" checkbox option. If there aren't enough items in the last group, you can add padding and fill the last non-full group with a custom item. The program works with all possible list formats. As list items can be separated by various characters, you can use either a single character separator or a regular expression separator to flexibly specify the input items. Listabulous!

Groups of Size 3

This example demonstrates grouping of list items and creates 9 groups of 3 items. The input list contains all alphabet letters (26 letters, separated by a semicolon) and the output is groups of letter trigrams. As the last group is missing one letter, we enable padding and add the underscore symbol as the padding element.

Group Hexagon Coordinates

In this example, we group the coordinates of a regular hexagon. The input coordinates are given as a space-separated list "x1 y1 x2 y2 x3 y3 …". What we want to do is create vector point pairs such as "(x1, y1); (x2, y2); (x3, y3); …". To do that, we use the space character as the input coordinate separator, and to create vectors, we group them by pairs. We wrap the coordinates in parentheses, put a comma between the x and y group items, and a semicolon between individual groups.

Convert a List to a TSV

In this example, we use our list item grouper to convert a food list to tab-separated values (TSV). As spaces are chaotically used between the items of the input list, we use the item separating regular expression "/\s+/" to match them. We create a TSV with three columns (three groups), separate them with a tab character, and put newlines between the groups.

Group a List of Synonyms

In this example, we group a list of words that are synonyms. We separate the input words in the list with a semicolon and as some of the items are empty, we enable the option to delete/skip empty items from the groups. We create groups of four words, put a dash between them, and enclose them in square brackets. We print one group per line and fill incomplete groups with an ellipsis.

Single Item Groups

This example creates unit groups of one symbol. The input list is all ten digits and we split them into individual items via a tricky regular expression "//". Next, we wrap each digit in curly braces and we concatenate all groups together by leaving the group separator symbol empty in the options.
