This tool strips double quote characters that surround values in CSV (Comma Separated Values) data. Quotes are often used in CSV files to enclose data that may already contain commas or other special characters. For example, if CSV data itself is comma-separated and a field contains a punctuation character, such as a comma, then that field must be enclosed in quotes to separate it from other fields. A common example of such a field is the number "1,234,567" where a comma is used as a thousands separator. To make sure this number isn't interpreted as three fields "1", "234", "567", it must be wrapped in quotes. Often, quotes may not be necessary at all. If the data doesn't contain commas, such as the number "1234567" (without thousands separators), a person's name, or a location, then quotes may be skipped. However, some CSV processing software always adds quotes around all fields. In these cases, you can eliminate quotes by using this program. To begin, you need to specify which delimiter character is used in the input CSV. Typically, this is a comma, but if it's a tab "\t", semicolon ";", or a pipe symbol "|", you can specify this delimiter in the options. Then, you need to indicate the existing quote character you want to remove. By default, it's double-quotes but you can also set it to single-quotes or any other character. Once you set these properties, the program will cleanse the input CSV of quotes where possible. Additionally, you can tidy up your CSV by removing empty lines and specifying the character used to denote comments, which will also be removed. Csv-abulous!

In this example, we load a fully quoted CSV with astrological signs, along with their associated symbols and elements. The data processing software that we used, added quotes to all fields but they are actually redundant and just take up extra space. To remove double quotes from all CSV fields, in the options, we specify a comma as the delimiter and a double-quote symbol as the quotation character. As a result, we obtain a clean CSV with astrological data, without any quotes.
In this example, we clean up an unusual CSV file containing movie titles and genres. Instead of a regular comma, this file uses a semicolon as the delimiter (which actually makes it an SSV file – a Semicolon Separated Values file), and instead of regular double quotes, it uses single quotes. The file also contains empty lines and a comment. We specify the non-standard delimiter and quote characters in the options, enable the removal of empty lines and comments, and get a neat CSV file without quotes or unnecessary lines.
In this example, we strip double quotes from a CSV file containing data about each planet and its orbital period (in days). In most fields of this CSV, quotes serve no significant purpose, however, the last four planets are an exception. Each number greater than or equal to a thousand is formatted using a decorative comma, separating the number's digits. To prevent this comma from mistakenly being considered a CSV value delimiter, this field must be enclosed in quotes at all times. Therefore, even after removing quotes from the CSV file, fields with a decorative comma remain quoted.
