This tool prepends one or more columns at the beginning of a CSV file. It allows you to quickly complement an existing CSV file with additional information while preserving all its original values and comma-separated structure. To do it, upload the original CSV file into the input field of this tool and enter or paste the new column (or multiple columns) in the first option. If you want to add a single column, use one value per line. If you want to add two, three, or more columns, use the corresponding number of values separated by commas on each line. In cases where the input CSV file or the specified new columns in the options contain missing fields, you can choose the handling mode for such fields. The first option, named "Output CSV Unchanged" displays the CSV with missing values as is. The second option, named "Remove Incomplete Rows" excludes the rows with missing values from the output CSV. The third option, named "Fill With Empty Values" appends a comma (which is equal to the empty symbol) in place of each missing CSV value. The fourth option, named "Fill With Custom Values" allows you to use a custom symbol specified in the options to fill in the missing data. Additionally, a pair of checkboxes in the options lets you clean the CSV file by removing empty lines and comment lines that start with a specific symbol. The two most common comment symbols are "#" (hash) and "//" (double-slash). But wait, there's more – if you need to add a column to the end of the CSV, you can use our Append a CSV Column tool, and if you need to insert a column anywhere in the CSV file, you can use our Insert a CSV Column tool. Csv-abulous!

In this example, we expand a CSV file containing data about food and its caloric content by prepending an additional column at the beginning of it. In the options, we create a new column named "Cuisine", containing five values with the origins of each dish. The tool then prepends this column at the beginning of the data and displays the updated CSV with three columns in the output.
This example transforms a CSV file of city names and their elevations into a more comprehensive dataset by adding the "Country" and "Code" columns. It prepends these two new columns before all other columns, extending each record with country information. The output CSV now shows a broader geographic context with additional information for each city.
In this example, we use our tool to quickly add a new column with header value "Type" to a CSV file of ingredients and their quantities. We assign each item a category: avocado is now labeled as fruit, quinoa is now labeled as grain, spinach is now labeled as plant, etc. However, since both the input CSV and the new CSV column are each missing a value, we use a custom symbol of ellipsis "…" to fill in the blank values. Additionally, we remove the empty lines and comment lines (starting with "#") from the input data and create a much cleaner output CSV.
You can pass input to this tool via ?input query argument and it will automatically compute output. Here's how to type it in your browser's address bar. Click to try!
