This tool transforms Comma Separated Values (CSV) files to JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data structures. Both formats are often used for data migration and backups, as well as as a data exchange format in various applications, including databases. Both formats, CSV and JSON, are semi-structured, which means the data has a raw format (viewable in a text editor) but still has some structure, allowing it to be parsed and easily extracted. By default, the CSV format uses a comma symbol to separate data columns and a double-quote symbol to quote fields. However, in the options of this tool, you can customize these values. If the input CSV data has a delimiter other than a comma (such as a semicolon ; or a pipe symbol |), then you can specify it in the "Column Separator" option. If the CSV uses a different character for quoting the fields (such as a single quote '), you can specify this quoting character in the "Field Quotation Character" option. In case the CSV contains comments (which usually start with a hash symbol # or a double slash //), you can exclude them by specifying the comment symbol in the "Line Comment Symbol" option, thereby speeding up parsing of the CSV as unnecessary lines will be skipped and won't be parsed. Several other options control the conversion process. If your CSV file has column titles (called headers) on the first row of data, the tool can automatically use the header values to set the keys of the JSON object. If the input CSV contains empty lines, you can choose to skip them. If empty lines aren't skipped, then a single empty value will be created for the first column of data. Additionally, you can customize the format of the output JSON. Specifically, you can choose not to wrap JSON numbers and booleans in quotes, as well as choose how to indent the JSON data structure. It can be indented with two spaces per level, a tab per level, or minified by using no indentation. Also, for the reverse transformation from JSON to CSV, you can use our Convert JSON to CSV tool. In this example, we convert a CSV with three columns into a JSON array of arrays of three elements. Each value from the CSV is converted into an individual item in the JSON array, wrapped in quotes, and placed in an array. After the conversion, all arrays are nested together, producing the output JSON. Additionally, the output JSON is minified, as we select the the unformatted JSON mode without indentation.
In this example, we load a CSV that uses semicolons as field separators. To convert this non-standard CSV to JSON, we specify the semicolon ";" as the separator symbol in the options. We also enable the headers option, which creates an array of JSON objects with the header values as keys of the JSON objects. For a nice visual formatting of the output JSON, we choose a two-space indentation, which is applied to each level of JSON.
This example converts CSV data about famous books into JSON. It uses the first line of data as the key values for the JSON objects. It also skips empty lines and commented lines starting with the "#" symbol. It also enables the dynamic data types option, which prints numbers and booleans without quotes. Finally, it indents the JSON data structure with tabs.
