This tool converts a previously escaped JSON string back to its standard format. JSON uses specific characters to denote its structure, such as double quotes (") for strings, newlines (\n) for line breaks, and tabs (\t) for indentation. However, if these characters need to be used within a string themselves, they have to be escaped. For example, the string "Hello, world!" (including surrounding quotes) in JSON would look like \"Hello, world!\". In this case, the (") character within the string is escaped by adding a backslash "\" before it. This tool reverses the escaping process by replacing all escaped characters with their original, unescaped equivalents. In addition to unescaping, the program also allows you to create neat JSON output by adding indentation to nested objects. By activating the "Prettify Output JSON" option, you can make the JSON more structured and create indentation using spaces or tabs. Json-abulous!

In this example, we unescape a simple JSON object containing two key-value pairs with escaped quotes around the keys and values. The tool removes all backslashes (\) before quotes, resulting in a usable JSON object that can be assigned to a variable.
In this example, we remove the escape characters from a JSON object and also prettify the output for better readability. For the prettification, we choose to indent the JSON using spaces and specify 2 spaces per indent level.
In this example, we unescape a JSON configuration string representing Lara Croft's character profile from the Tomb Raider video game. To visualize the hierarchical structure of the JSON with nested data, we enable the "Prettify Output" option and set the tab as an indentation character.
You can pass input to this tool via ?input query argument and it will automatically compute output. Here's how to type it in your browser's address bar. Click to try!

We're Browserling — a friendly and fun cross-browser testing company powered by alien technology. At Browserling, our mission is to make people's lives easier, so we created this collection of JSON tools. Our tools have the simplest user interface that doesn't require advanced computer skills and they are used by millions of people every month. Behind the scenes, all JSON tools are actually powered by our web developer tools that we created over the last couple of years. Check them out!
